GARY MONAHAN

Gary Monahan was first elected to the Costa Mesa City Council in 1994. He served as Mayor Pro-Tem from 1996 to 1998 and after re-election to the City Council was elevated to the Mayor's office in December 1998 and served a term of two years. He was appointed Mayor again in May 2003 to finish an un-expired term of the previous Mayor. Gary was appointed Mayor Pro Tem on January 3, 2005 and served in that capacity until 2006. Gary ran for Council office again in 2008 and won.  

In addition to his duties as a Council Member, Gary is currently serving a four-year term as a Board of Director for the Costa Mesa Sanitary District. Gary was elected to the Sanitary District's Board of Directors in 2006. He is, at present, Board Secretary and Chair of the District's Sewer System Committee.

Gary has also been a member of the Costa Mesa Chamber of Commerce Board since 1994, and serves on the Costa Mesa Tourism and Promotions Council Board. He became a member of the Transportation Corridor Agencies Board in 1999 and appointed as a member of the Orange County Transportation Authority in November 2004 and officially sworn in on January 10, 2005.  

Gary was born in Utica, New York, raised in Mountain View, California, and came to Costa Mesa in 1987. He is a restaurateur by profession and currently owns Skosh Monahan's Steakhouse and Irish Pub in Costa Mesa. He has been active in St. Joachim's parish and school and has been an active advocate for children with developmental disabilities, especially Autism.

Gary and his wife Deborah have 6 children, Echo, Ethan, Aaron, Quinn, Ryan, and Gavin.
